Conservation Champions

Fiordland 1Conservation of our wilderness is an important priority for Te Anau and Manapouri residents. It is also a constant challenge; Fiordland's beautiful native birds are under attack from mammals introduced by humans, including mice, rats, stoats and possums.

There are community-backed projects to trap and kill these invasive and destructive mammals in Fiordland National Park, and restore the habitats that help our birds to thrive. These projects are managed by the Department of Conservation and by a number of different local charitable conservation organisations. They are delivered by paid staff but also many fabulous volunteers based locally and from elsewhere.
