Sailing in Te Anau

Lake Te Anau - sailing, yacht club

In many parts of the world sailing is an elite sport of the very rich. Not so in Te Anau. We have a big, beautiful lake and we know how to use it; and we want everyone to have a go. There is a fabulous yacht club in the town, the Marakura Yacht Club, which is a short walk along the lakefront south from the main street.

It's a family-based club with a strong youth section. Kids are chucked out in boats on Lake Te Anau on their "learn to sail" programme, complete with lifejackets and instruction, from a young page. The club uses Optis and P's, to Starlings and Lasers.

The club has a great website which shows safe anchorage points around Lake Te Anau on a very useful map and lists boats available to purchase. Go to the Marakura Yacht Club.

There's a marina for private boats at the north end of town.

Sailing in Manapouri

There is a marina in Manapouri for boats and Lake Manapouri is simply the most beautiful lake in New Zealand for sailing, with its dozens of island providing great stop offs for fishing or lazing around.
